January 5th 2022 marked the 100 year anniversary of the death of Sir Ernest Shackleton.
The Antarctic Quest 21 Expedition team held a commemoration service in honour of one the great leaders of the ‘heroic age’ of exploration. Using satellite communications technology provided by The AST Group the team were able to livestream this service to an international audience, sharing stories of their expedition so far and answering questions about expedition life and the progress and purpose of the scientific research.
Facilitated by Alexis Bowater, this was a fantastic hour with some lovely moments, including the toast to Sir Shackleton led by Expedition Leader Paul Hart, and Deputy Leader Antony Jinman reading a poem written by competition winner Elise from St Thomas More school in Bexleyheath.
Sponsors get shout outs, the whole team are introduced – including Ernie the Penguin! – and we learn who the loudest snorer is!
Led by Expedition Leader, Paul Hart, the team raised a glass of The Shackleton Whisky as a toast. Paul went on to read some words:
“They went into the unknown, they went into the untrodden, and they were going there to expand man’s knowledge about our planet. That’s what we’re recreating with our expedition.”
Paul Hart, Expedition Leader
